Financial Independence: what does it mean?

“Financial independence is not a dream. Call 416-XXX-XXX”.
Financial independence means different things to different people. I was introduced to this idea many years ago by reading the Rich Dad series of books. So out of curiosity, I called the number, hoping that the person who picks up the phone is the driver in the car. Luckily, it was him and we had a very pleasant chat. It turns out that his idea of financial independence is different than mine. He’s involved with an MLM organization that recruits people under him. He believes that if you are working for yourself and you are not depending on your employer for income, then you are financially independent.
In a way, it is similar to my view in that you don’t need to rely on an employer for income, however, my definition goes beyond working for yourself. I define financial independence as the ability to live and enjoy life without working for money at all! This is a BIG definition because most people need to work to keep up with their living standards. It’s unthinkable for them to think that they can stop working and still have money coming in. Yet, for a lot of successful investors whom I know, are truly financially independent because their money is working for them and they have money coming in every month regardless if they work or not. The key is to have enough (or more) passive income every month without having to work yourself! You can choose to work or not. Now, that is financial independence!
How is that possible you may ask?
Well, if you have been following my blog every month, you probably already know my answer! For me, it is in investing in real estate wisely – both passive and active. That is because it is my passion. For you, it may be owning your own business or having a franchise. Whatever your choice is, it’s up to you and it is your definition of financial independence.
As I finish my conversation with this MLM rep, I thought about why aren’t there more people focusing on being financially free and less on their job. I would prefer to have more money coming in from my investments instead of getting a raise, because getting a raise usually means more work and more responsibilities … and that ultimately means less freedom!
So, if you are interested in making your money work harder for you and give you the passive income that you want so that you can work less, feel free to call me.
Wishing you one step closer to your financial freedom!
